The 2015 Volkswagen Passat sedan is offered in six main trim levels: S, Wolfsburg, Limited Edition, SE, Sport and SEL Premium. The diesel-powered TDI variant is essentially available in SE and SEL Premium trims.

The base S comes standard with 16-inch steel wheels, automatic headlights, keyless entry, full power accessories, air-conditioning, a height-adjustable driver seat (with two-way manual lumbar adjustment), a 60/40-split-folding rear seat, cloth upholstery, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, a trip computer, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity and a six-speaker sound system with a CD player and an auxiliary audio jack.

The Wolfsburg edition adds 16-inch alloy wheels, leatherette (premium vinyl) upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, a six-way power driver seat (with two-way power lumbar), heated front seats, satellite radio, an iPod interface and VW's Car-Net telematics system.

With the Limited Edition you get 17-inch alloy wheels, foglights, a rearview camera, keyless ignition and entry and an eight-speaker sound system with a touchscreen interface. At the SE trim level you lose the keyless ignition and entry but gain heated mirrors, rear seat air vents, a sliding front armrest, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and upgraded gauges and displays.

The Passat Sport is similar to the SE, but has 19-inch wheels, a rear spoiler, steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles (with the automatic transmission), front sport seats and faux carbon-fiber interior accents.

The top-of-the-line SEL Premium includes all of the SE features as well as 18-inch wheels, a sunroof, keyless ignition and entry, remote ignition, a six-way power passenger seat (with two-way power lumbar), driver memory functions, leather upholstery (with simulated suede seat inserts), wood grain interior trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, a navigation system, upgraded audio (with music storage and HD radio) and a separate ski pass-through for the 60/40 rear seat.

Many of the upper trims' features can be had on lower trims as options, either individually or via packages.

The 2015 VW Passat is front-wheel drive and comes with a choice of three distinctly different engines.

All trim levels except the TDI have a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine rated at 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The Sport and S trims can be had with either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic, while the Wolfsburg, SE and SEL Premium come only with the automatic. In performance testing, the Passat 1.8T SEL went from zero to 60 mph in a quick 7.7 seconds. EPA fuel economy estimates are 28 mpg combined (24 city/36 highway) with the automatic and 28 combined (24/35) with the manual. These are respectable numbers for a four-cylinder midsize sedan, though other top rivals are typically 2-3 mpg better.

The TDI, available in SE and SEL Premium versions, comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engine with 150 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. The SE version comes with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automated manual transmission (known as DSG) while the SEL Premium is DSG only. The EPA-estimated fuel economy is an excellent 34 mpg combined (30 city/42 highway) for the automatic and 35 mpg combined (30/44) with the manual. In extensive fuel economy testing of the previous Passat TDI, we saw that the car easily met or exceeded its EPA estimates. That's not typically the case with hybrid sedans.

The strongest engine available on the Passat is a 3.6-liter V6, which churns out 280 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. It's optional on the SEL Premium and comes with the DSG automated manual transmission. In testing, a Passat 3.6 accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds, which is quick for this class. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 23 mpg combined (20 city/28 highway).

Standard safety features for the 2015 Volkswagen Passat include antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front side airbags and front and rear side curtain airbags. A rearview camera is standard on SE, Sport and SEL trims. VW's Car-Net telematics system, standard from the Wolfsburg model on up, includes automatic crash notification, roadside assistance, remote vehicle access, stolen vehicle location and geo-fencing (which allows parents to set boundaries for teenage drivers). A Car-Net smartphone app lets owners control many of these functions on the go. However, features increasingly available on family sedans, such as blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning and frontal collision warning aren't available.

In government crash testing, the Passat scored a perfect five stars overall, with five for frontal impact protection and five for side crash protection. Similarly, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Passat its top score of "Good" for frontal moderate-overlap, side-impact and roof-strength tests. It received the institute's second-highest rating of "Acceptable" in the small-overlap frontal-offset crash test. The Passat's seat and head restraint design was rated "Good" for whiplash protection in rear impacts.

In brake testing, a Passat 3.6 SEL came to a stop from 60 mph in about 130 feet, which is longer than average. However, a 1.8 SEL stopped in a class-average 123 feet, while a TDI SEL took 124 feet.

We think most buyers will be quite happy with the 1.8-liter engine. It's quick and smooth and provides good fuel economy. It's quicker than the TDI, too, but the latter boasts lively low-end power and returns truly extraordinary fuel economy and fuel range. For those who care more about high power than high fuel mileage, the 3.6-liter V6 engine delivers much more enthusiastic acceleration.

The DSG automated manual transmission that's available with the TDI engine and standard with the V6 generally feels like a regular automatic transmission and, in some cases, it's better -- it provides impressively quick downshifts in highway passing situations. One negative is the DSG's lackadaisical responsiveness. Unless it's in Sport mode, there's a slight but noticeable delay between the time you press down on the gas pedal and when the engine actually responds. Most owners get used to this quirk in time, or, if they want snappier response, select Sport mode.

On the highway, all 2015 Volkswagen Passats are impressively quiet and comfortable, snuffing out bumps large and small. Around turns, the steering is reasonably precise, although there's not much feel for the road and some drivers find it a tad heavy at low speeds. Overall, though, the Passat earns high marks for its relaxed, refined demeanor in everyday driving.

Some midsize family sedans strive to be sporty while others go for comfort. As with premium German-engineered cars costing thousands more, the VW Passat deftly splits the difference. On the highway it's smooth, solid and quiet. Point it in the direction of a twisty road, and you'll find a surprisingly entertaining driver. The latter is especially true when the Passat is paired with its new base engine, a 170-horsepower 1.8-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that replaces the old 2.5-liter 5-cylinder. Despite its small size, this engine has enough oomph to capably power the Passat. There is a bit of turbo lag, but putting the car in Sport mode helps alleviate the initial hesitation. Drivers seeking the most potency can step up to the Passat V6, which boasts 280 horsepower. Yet our pick for the Passat remains the TDI diesel, which offers loads of power and excellent efficiency (see below).

PASSAT TDI DIESELIf you still equate the word "diesel" with those slow, sooty, puttering vehicles of decades past, it's time for a mental update. Modern turbodiesels like the 2015 VW Passat TDI are quick, have loads of torque and return eye-popping fuel economy. We've cracked 50 mpg in our long-term test Passat.REAR-SEAT LEGROOMYou don't have to be an NBA player to appreciate the Passat's rear seat, but if you are this is the midsize sedan for you. Technically there are 39.1 inches of legroom back there, but beyond the numbers it feels like there's even more. So go ahead, give that athlete a lift.

The 2015 Passat's 5-passenger interior is roomy for sure (see above), but is otherwise tastefully understated. Base versions of VW's midsize sedan are rather plain with cloth seats and – gasp! – an audio system that doesn't boast a touch screen. Both of those facets are rectified as one climbs trim levels. Midrange models receive Volkswagen's V-Tex faux-leather seating surfaces, while high-end trims get the real thing along with wood-grain trim. At nearly 15.9 cubic feet the Passat's trunk space is copious, and 60/40-split folding rear seats add to this sedan's versatility.

This newest-generation Passat bucks the flavor-of-the-month style contest that's going on in much of the midsize-sedan segment. VW's largest sedan instead plays it conservative but classy with a sleek and subtly angular appearance. Its prominent, 3-bar horizontally slatted grille makes the Passat look like a more expensive car from the front. Wheel sizes vary from 16 to 19 inches, with variants such as the Luxor alloys on the Sport Edition adding visual pop.

If you go the least expensive route on your new Passat sedan, spending just under $ 22,000 for a base model, you'll get the basics like air conditioning, 6-speaker AM/FM/CD player with auxiliary input (but no USB port), 6-way manual adjust front seats and 5-speed manual transmission, plus Bluetooth wireless connectivity with audio streaming, and automatic on/off headlights. All new 2015 Passats also come with one year or 10,000 miles of free scheduled maintenance.

Except for a 6-speed automatic transmission on lower models, major options are bundled on the Passat and are gained by climbing trims. A Wolfsburg Edition, for instance, adds a power driver's seat, VW's subscription-based Car-Net system that pairs with your iPhone or Android device to relay vehicle information, and an iPod connector. SE trims bring the V-Tex Leatherette seating surfaces, touch-screen audio interface, rearview camera, rear-seat air vents and 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels. Top-line SEL models have navigation, a Fender premium audio system, wood-grain interior trim and automatic climate control.

The 2015 Volkswagen Passat debuted with a new design that combines stylish clarity with a high level of impressive power, features that merge both on the exterior and interior. The 2012 Volkswagen Passat was officially introduced to the North American market, where it replaces the previous-generation Passat B6 (also known as the New Midsize Sedan), at the 2011 NAIAS, in Detroit.

The history of the "People's Car", Volkswagen, begins on May 28th 1937 when the "Geselschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagen mbH" company is created. A year later it is renamed into "Volkswagenwerk GmbH" has it's headquarters established in Wolfsburg, a city especially created for the workers on the Volkswagen plant that are going to mass produce Hitler's dream car for the average German, designed by Ferdinand Porsche.

But Hitler's plans weren't going to materialize because WWII started and the plant switched production to armaments and the vehicles under the VW logo went to the army of the Third Reich. After the war, the plant at Wolfsburg went under Allied control, British to be specific, and under the supervision of Major Ivan Hirst, Volkswagen began the mass production of the Type 1, or the Beetle as it would come to be known throughout the world.

Initial sales abroad were disastrous, but through clever advertising, the Beetle gained popularity with the young crowd and from 1945 to 1955 numbers reached the 1 million mark. Meanwhile, sometime at the end of the 40s, Volkswagen also introduced the Type 2, a people carrier, known as the "VW Bully".

Even through the 60s and 70s, the Beetle manages to stay on top of sales, despite the fact that it was becoming obsolete. Reliability, easy maintenance and reduced fuel consumption made the car remain a consumer favorite. On February 17th 1972, Volkswagen celebrated selling over 15 million units of the Beetle sold, thus surpassing the Ford Model T as the most popular car in the world, a title which it still holds to this day.

Despite the success it had with the Beetle, by the beginning of the 70s, Volkswagen AG was in dire need of new models to replace the aging Beetle. The help came from Audi/Auto Union, which WV had bought back in the sixties. They brought with them the knowledge for front-wheel drive vehicles and water-cooled engines.

In 1974, the first Golf rolls out of the factory's door and becomes and instant hit. Marketed as the Rabbit in the United States and Canada, it was responsible for putting Volkswagen back on the map. That same year, a more sporty model, the Scirocco makes it's way onto the Volkswagen line up. For the smaller car market, the German car maker came up with the Polo in 1976, which was quite popular throughout Western Europe.

The next decade saw Volkswagen trying to improve their products with new generations of all the older models and expanding their influence by taking over Spanish manufacturer Seat and the Czech-based Skoda Auto.

As the 90s rolled in, VW-owned Audi became a direct competitor for BMW and Mercedes-Benz with products designed for a more pretentious market. This left a void in the general market which Volkswagen now tried to fill. The third generation vehicles now came with better quality and standards. Gradually, new luxury models were introduced, like the Touareg, a premium off-road vehicle.

In the last decade, Volkswagen has been busy trying to set records when it comes to CO2 emissions and fuel-efficient technologies. This applies to their normal engines, running on gas and diesel, but they are also developing hybrids.

Limited Edition PZEV 4dr Sedan (1.8L 4cyl Turbo 6A)

Thank you Bambi

This is my 3rd passat. My previous 2006,v-6 model gave its life when a deer tried to occupy the same space. It had 163K miles and was fit for 100K more.Sorry to give it up,but my luck,I was 10 miles from a vw dealership and it was the end of the month(deal time).Took a step down on options but went from 28 mpg on premium to 1.8 tsi limited on regular.I'm old,and drive pretty easy,84 freeway miles a day.I'm tickling 40mpg.The new Passat is almost paying for itself(low payments).I love this new Passat.I'ts comfortable, quick enough and very sure footed in the first Wisconsin snow. This car is a great cruiser,a little softer ride than the '06 but still sporty,I don't feel the expansion joints like in the old one.Our other car is an Acura TSL,nice, but everyone in our family prefers driving the VW's.Hope this helps. as of 12/26/17,still lovin it.No issues at 43000 mi.As of 6/26/18,54K on odometer, still happy.Brakes feel like I have a bad rotor, really?,I never use them,90% freeway. But thats my only complaint. No other issues, still love driving it,hope it lasts a long time.Oh ya,I moved up an age bracket.Acura traded for a Jeep Unlimited. As of 12/28/18....63K ,Yep,bad rear rotor, that and oil changes are my only expense so far.I really am very happy with it,still love driving it.

TDI SEL Premium 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl Turbodiesel 6AM)

A solid and reliable car that should endure

The conservative but stylish european-esque design should keep this car looking fresh while many competitors designs become dates looking over the years. The ride quality is solid without being too stiff. The thing I love about this car the most is the fuel economy of the TDI, VW certainly undersells the MPG. Most long term reviews state that they easily exceeded the MPG rating, and that's been true for us. Our typical combined MPG during a normal driving day is right at 40mpg. The interior is massive compared to other's in the midsize class. I'm 6'2" and this is the first car in which I didn't have to put the driver's seat all the way back and I can stretch my legs out in the rear

TDI SEL Premium 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl Turbodiesel 6AM)

Solid, Well-designed and great MPG

The Volkswagen TDI SEL 2.0 is a very good highway car in the $ 30k range with a strong turbo assisted diesel and great milage. In eight months, I am approaching 18k miles and am averaging 42 mpg which includes a good mix of bumper to bumper stop and go Tollway driving as well as open highway cruising. As pro reviewers stated, it's solid and very roomy. The radio display is a bit boring with a basic red on black display and the response time is slow from pressing the touch screen to seeing anything happen. ( The screen is not an iPad) The Fender stereo setup is decent for the price range.

Wolfsburg Edition 4dr Sedan (1.8L 4cyl Turbo 6A)

Overall Great

Went from a 2010 Suburban to my Passat to save a little on gas. Now I spend about $ 50 a month rather than $ 130, so that is a big benefit right there. Bought mine used for under $ 15k certified. I am 6'5" 255" and am comfortable in the drivers seat, but would probably have a hard time in the back seat. Have taken my family of 4 on vacation in this, and my 2 boys are tall as well. Everyone was comfortable. Great gas mileage and handling. When the turbo kicks in its like hitting hyper space. Took some getting used to, but very enjoyable to drive. Currently have 28,000 miles and not any issues. As with any VW, service is key. Run synthetic oil and keep up on the service. Since service can be rather expensive, would suggest if you are mechanically inclined to do as much as possible yourself. Just had a quote for a 40k service on the wifes Jetta and was almost $ 500, which you can do for about $ 150 in parts if you do it yourself. The big hit is NSG plugs which can run $ 15 a piece. How can you beat German ingenuity, they got it right for us tall people. I can not fit in comparable cars comfortably like Toyotas or Hondas. [non-permissible content removed]

2016 Volkswagen Passat

"This is my third VW. I owned each one."

Good dealer service. Performance is more than adequate with the 1.8 T. I appreciate the roominess of this R-line Passat, with Comfort and Light Pkg. What I dislke most of all is the 19 in. Salvador Alloys w. 235/40x19 inch tires. They are so succesible to curb/pothole scrapes. I've owned over 23 new cars in my lifetime and NEVER had this problem before. All 4 tires / wheels are a mess. I do appreciate that VW still give you a spare rather than a can. You will appreciate this if you get a flat!

2018 Volkswagen Passat

"Very satisfied and BEST Warranty in the Industry"

Gets very good MPG, 27.5 City, 35.4 Highway. Quiet ride, Technology package warns of front, rear, blind side. Car STOPS on it's own if I don't. Handling is very responsive. Good traction in rain & snow. My 1st 2 fuel fill ups were lower tier rated regular gas. The engine bogged down when I needed acceleration. I switched to a Top tier gas (Exxon Regular) the acceleration was on the money, and the MPG increased as well. I recommend only using the 4-5 TOP Tier fuels with the 2.0 engine
